New and Improved Chavez/Manfredo Announces Retirement

By Peter Lim: Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. pinned Peter Manfredo Jr. against the ropes and rained down a non-stop flurry of lefts and rights on him prompting referee Lawrence Cole to jump in and end the contest at 1:52 of the fifth round. But as impressive and spectacular as the fight-ending salvo was, it did not compare to the incredible metamorphosis that Chavez underwent since his previous bout.

Freddie Roach had converted a bull into a matador.

Patiently circling the ring Chavez, 44-0-1 (31 KOs), allowed Manfredo to be the one to be the aggressor all night. When he saw the openings, he stepped in and rattled off jolting rights and left hooks with precision and timing. Manfredo, 37-7 (20 KOs), kept pressing the action, finding a measure of success with jabs and straight rights, but for the most part, his charges were sidestepped and countered by an uncharacteristically nimble and calculating Chavez.

Manfredo, 30, turned up the heat a notch in the fifth round and landed a series of jolting rights to the head that forced Chavez to momentarily back off and reset. But just when he seemed to be gaining confidence and turning the tide, he walked into a right hand-left hook that sent him careening to the ropes.

Chavez, 25, immediately seized the opportunity and unleashed a fusillade of punches from both fists. Almost out on his feet, Manfredo attempted to clinch but Chavez shoved him off and continued the pummeling. After more unanswered blows were delivered, Cole stepped in and waved the fight over.

"We worked on defense, defense, defense in training camp," Chavez said. "But I eventually knew it would turn into a brawl and it did.

"Iā€™m not afraid of anyone ā€” Sergio Martinez, Canelo Alvarez ā€” whoever it is, I will fight them next."

Manfredo announced his retirement at the post fight press conference.
