Nieves Claims Another Close Decision In Kissimmee


WBO Latino junior welterweight champion Jose “Miau” Nieves (19-2-3, 8 KOs) scored a controversial 12 round majority decision win over Cuauhtemoc Vargas (15-6-1, 10 KOs) at the Kissimmee Civic Center in Kissimmee, Florida on Friday night.

Vargas, who was the aggressor in this rematch, looked the busier, but Nieves was ahead at the end by scores of 117-111, 117-113 on two cards while the third official made the fight even at 114-114 each. Their first clash back in April at the same venue, also ended with Nieves winning a controversial split decision.

On the undercard featherweight Hairon Socarras (4-0, 4 KOs) scored a first round knockout over Eduardo Melendez. A light middleweight scrap saw Frank Gedeon score a third round tko win over Alan Sanchez.
