By Derek Bonnett: Secondsout’s junior flyweight hierarchy experienced some movement as one of boxing’s pound for pound leaders, Ivan Calderon, suffered his first professional loss at Coliseo Mario Quijote Morales in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico.
Ivan Calderon and Giovanni Segura put on a fight of the year performance in their 108 pound unification bout. The two kept the Puerto Rico-Mexico rivalry fuming over eight rounds. Segura, now 25-1-1 (21), wasn’t winning as many rounds as Calderon, but the Mexican power puncher slowly stole the will of the Puerto Rican champion. Calderon fell to 34-1-1 (6).
Although the upset was considerable, the movement in Secondsout’s 108 pound rankings is only minimal. Segura, now the WBA/WBO unified champion, moves into first place with the win. Calderon, although he was counted out in the eighth after a vicious body assault, only dips to second. Ulises Solis, who is rebuilding slowly after his loss to Brian Viloria, remains at third. Omar Nino Romero remains at fourth since he has only just re-established himself after a lengthy layoff. However, these two are surely men to watch for in the division and upward mobility should be expected in the near future.
