Ramos Ko’s Shimoda, Gonzalez Retains Title, Arreola Victorious


American Rico Ramos (20-0, 11 KOs) scored a spectacular seventh round knockout against Akifumi Shimoda (23-3-1, 10 KOs) to claim the WBA super bantamweight title at the Boardwalk Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City on Saturday night.

Champion Shimoda was out to make an impression and the more aggressive of the two but it was Ramos who connected with a massive left hook after 2:26 of the seventh round put Shimoda down for the full count.

WBC featherweight king Jhonny Gonzalez (48-7, 43 KOs) retained his title via a fourth round stoppage win over Tomas Villa (23-8-4, 14 KOs). Gonzalez systematically broke Villa down form the start of the, before dropping him with a straight right hand 0:39 of the fourth.

In a heavyweight bout former world title challenger Chris Arreola (33-2, 28 KOs) scored a clear 10 round unanimous decision over Friday Ahunanya (24-8-3, 13 KOs). The scores were 100-90 and 99-91 twice.

In a middleweight Denis Douglin (13-1, 8 KOs) out0pointed Philip McCants (9-3-1, 3 KOs) over six by scores of 58-56 and 60-64 twice. At junior middleweight Thomas Lamanna stopped debuting Reggie Jenkins after 2:14 of opening round.
