As expected Monday’s press conference at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles between Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios, (29-0-1, 22 KOs), and WBA interim lightweight champion Richard ‘El Tigre” Abril, (17-2-1, 8 KOs), became a little heated.
Speaking to the media an appreciative Abril said: “I want to thank Top Rank for the opportunity to be in this fight”.
Abril also took the opportunity to explain his actions back in Miami when he attended the Brandon Rios vs Yuriorkis Gamboa. Press conference. “I want to say that what happened in Miami was a result of me being disrespected,” insisted Abril.
“I don’t understand English that well but when someone says f–k to me in my face, that’s disrespectful.”
Rios then took to the podium and made it perfectly clear that he is ready to regain the WBA lightweight title he lost on the scales last December.
“I am ready,” said Rios. “I feel great all said and done April 14 I am going to get my title back and be the lightweight champion once again.”
Rios added, “‘Who is Richard Abril?’ everyone asked. Nobody knew who he was and they still won’t know who he is because April 14 I am getting my title back and moving on to bigger and better things."
Regarding the Miami press conference incident with Abril Rios stated “What happened in Miami, he is going to find out I will knock his ass out.”
The press conference concluded with the customary face-to-face for press photographs but instead of just going eye to eye the pair began to get physical when Rios shoved Abril.
The pair were separated by team members . Rios and Abril then sat down to answer more questions from the media.
“I have a technical style. I like using my distance or depending on what Brandon brings. This is a great opportunity for me I will give a great fight and I will shine,” said Abril. “He is anticipating that he will be champion once again but he better not be too overconfident. If he is he will go down.”
Rios said: "No unheard of fighter like Abril will ever beat me. He’s going to go down and go down real hard. In the boxing world Abril is in the darkness and I plan to keep him there. I haven’t forgotten what he did to me in Miami. He’s going to pay big-time for that."
The Interim WBA lightweight interim showdown between Branson Rios and Richard Abril takes place at the Mandalay Bay Resort And Casino in Las Vegas on Saturday, April 14 and will be televised Live by HBO Pay-Per-View®, beginning at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT.
