Rudel Obreja, the president of the Romanian Boxing Federation has had 11 years added to the two years he has already been suspended for by the International Boxing Association after breaching safety rules.
The AIBA disciplinary committee reported Friday that Obreja failed to adhere to terms of his two-year suspension, which had been upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The committee added another 11 years and fined him $18,000.
The committee heard Obreja organized an event in February 2009 in which some fighters did not use headguards as is required by all amateur boxers. The committee also fined the Romanian federation $13,500 and suspended it for a month.
Romanian daily newspaper Gazeta Sporturilor reported Monday that Obreja had vowed to stay on as president and was planning an appeal. Romanian government sports official Doina Melinte has threatened to cut funding to the federation.
