SecondsOut Team Pick Darchinyan vs. Guerrero

The champion has almost irresistible knockout power, while the relatively unknown challenger is planning on springing an upset of epic proportions, but that hasn’t stopped SecondsOut’s team of fearless writers from making their confident picks for Saturday WBC/WBA super flyweight world title boxing match between belt-holder Vic Darchinyan and Rodrigo Guerrero at the Agua Caliente Casino in Rancho Mirage, California, televised in the USA on Showtime.

“After an unsuccessful splash in the bantamweight ranks, unified WBA/WBC super flyweight king Darchinyan looked strong again this past December - blowing out Tomas Rojas in two rounds. Little known challenger Guerrero is rated in the top 15 by the WBA, WBC and IBF, but hasn’t faced nearly the caliber of opponents compared to the Raging Bull. I like Darchinyan by unanimous decision. Darchinyan W.UD.12.”
- Gregory Juckett, Content Editor - New York, USA

“Only the most highly skilled and talented boxers trouble Vic Darchinyan. The Raging Bull knocks everyone else out. Darchinyan W.KO.3.”
- Paul Upham, Content Editor - Sydney, Australia

“Darchinyan is too experienced and has met the better opposition. Easy night for Vic as he stops Guerrero in six. Darchinyan W.KO.6.”
- Jerry Glick - Contributing Editor - New York City, USA

“’The Raging Bull gores another highly-ranked Mexican. Darchinyan W.KO.5.”
- Mark Butcher, Founding Editor - London, UK

“You have to wonder about a fighter whose stated plan is to not be intimidated by their opponent and punch with a proven world class puncher. If he fails on the first part, he gets KO’d. If he attempts the second, he will probably get KO’d. Enough said. Darchinyan W.KO.4.”
- John Lumpkin - Madison, Wisconsin, USA

“At 115, Vic Darchinyan is hard to beat unless your name is Donaire. Guerrero lacks the experience to hang with Darchinyan and Vic isn’t the type of guy who sleeps on the guys he’s supposed to blow out - he just blows them out. Darchinyan W.KO.5.”
- Derek Bonnett - Connecticut, USA

“Jorge Arce had 56 professional fights prior to facing Darchinyan. From the opening bell it was easy to detect that Arce had never seen anything quite like Darchinyan coming towards him. I can’t see Guerrero figuring it out in his 15th pro fight. Darchinyan may take a while to lock in, but it is only a matter of time. Darchinyan W.TKO. 4.”
- Jason Pribila - Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, USA

“Vic is the man, how could you not favour him in this particular fight? He is way more experienced and definitely sharper in all aspects. I like the Mexican as well of course, out of 13 victories (he has one defeat and a draw as well) he has managed to stop 9 of them and that is not bad, still I think he will have an uphill struggle to defeat the Australian based Armenian though. I just think Darchinyan has too much to offer for him. It’s not too optimistic to believe Vic will finish this guy off. A late round KO is my prediction, and halfway into round nine Guerrero falls. Could I be more precise? Darchinyan W.KO.9.”
- Teddy Stenmark - Sweden

“The Vic Darchinyan-Rodrigo Guerrero fight, which is for Darchinyan’s titles (WBA, WBC), looks more like an exhibition or stay busy fight for Darchinyan while he waits for Nonito Donaire to give him a rematch. Guerrero has only 15 fights/60 rounds of experience under his belt, while Darchinyan has been fighting at the highest level for years. I think Darchinyan knocks out Guerrero within 5 rounds. Darchinyan W.KO. 4.”
- Derek Gionta - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA

Total:

VIC DARCHINYAN = 9

RODRIGO GUERRERO = 0
