WBA mini flyweight champ Giovanni Segura not only ripped the WBO crown away from Ivan Calderon via a sensational eighth round knockout in their unification battle at Coliseo Mario “Quijote” Morales in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico on Saturday night but also his unbeaten record.
The 35 year-old Calderon boxed his way impressively to an early lead in the first four and half rounds but Segura pressed the fight and eventually caught up with Calderon in the fifth and sixth rounds, hurting him repeatedly.
Calderon, ever the consummate pro, weathered the storm and got back to his boxing. But the tenacious Segura kept pushing forward and eventually the pressure paid off after 1.34 of the eighth round when he floored Calderon for the full count with a sickening punch underneath the ribcage.
In other action junior welterweight prospect Alex De Jesus, 20-1-(13), won a six-rounder over José Ángel Román.
