The April 24 Super Six Super-middleweight tournament clash between Andre Ward and Allan Green has been postponed after Ward suffered a recurring knee injury forced him to cut back on training.
Speaking to espn.com following his decision to pull out a disappointed Ward said: "I want this fight in the worst way, and am very excited about it. I have been having recurring problems with my right knee.
"I went to camp and tried for a week and half to two weeks, and I can’t run like I’m supposed to. I want Allan Green to get an Andre Ward that’s 100 percent, just like I want an Allan Green that is 100 percent."
According to Ward’s physician, Dr. Warren King, who is also the orthopedic surgeon for the Oakland Raiders, the unbeaten American will be out of action for between four to six weeks.
It is a major setback for Showtime, the creators of the innovative six man super-middleweight tournament, who planned to broadcast a tournament double header. WBC champion Carl Froch defends his title against Mikkel Kessler in Herning, Denmark on the same night and Showtime planned to broadcast both fights back to back.
