Jerry Glick at ringside: In front of a raucous, but happy crowd, Martin Wright won the NBA Jr. Intercontinental Welterweight Belt with unanimous ten round decision at The Cordon Bleu in Queens, NY on a New Legends and Old World Boxing promoted seven card show.
Both combatants went down; Wright, 145 ½ pounds, in the first from a right to the chin, while Ruiz, also 145 ½ pounds, tasted the canvas once each in the seventh and ninth frames. Because of Ruiz’ lack of reach which prompted him to lunge in with his punches, they tumbled down to the canvas on a few occasions together.
The Judges scored it 97-90, 98-90, and 96-91, all for Wright who improved to 11-1-2 (5 KOs), and Ruiz dropped to 15-6 (7 KOs). David Fields refereed.
After a controversial draw in their first meeting, Jonathan Cuba, 134 pounds, made it clear who was better on this night with a convincing eight round split decision over Ariel Duran, 135 pounds, by scores of 77-74 and 76-75 for Cuba and 76-75 for Duran. With the win Cube gets the NYS Lightweight Belt.
Cuba won by keeping the pressure on his opponent, as he pinned him to the ropes round after round with solid punches. Cuba got off the canvas in round one to fight his way back to victory. He is now 6-3-1 (4 KOs), and Duran is 7-3-1 (4 KOs). Wayne Kelly refereed.
