By Ant Evans: Former WBO heavyweight champion Tommy ‘the Duke’ Morrison will have his first fight in 11 years Thursday night at the Mountaineer Race Track and Gaming Resort, Chester, West Virginia.
The popular Morrison, who retired in 1996 after been diagnosed as HIV positive, will box one John Castle in a non-televised four rounder.
Morrison has spoken for some time about returning to the sport, claiming that he was ‘misdiagnosed’ with HIV.
But Morrison told British writer Owen Slot that the modern HIV tests are much more accurate than those available in the mid-1990s and, according to Slot, Morrison makes a compelling case for never having had HIV in the first place.
Promoters Top Rank have called a ‘major press conference’ for Wednesday concerning Morrison and it appears the Duke has been cleared to fight after undergoing a battery of medical tests.
Morrison, who fought the likes of Razor Ruddock, George Foreman and Lennox Lewis in his heyday, has been in training for several month in Phoenix.
