Diaz Schools Trejo In Halloween Brawl

By Sean Wippert at ringside: Tonight’s main event featured a pair of well versed lightweight fighters striving towards the road to redemption. Julio “The Kidd” Diaz from Coachella, CA was coming off a rebound win after a tough loss to Juan “Baby Bull” Diaz. The loss cost him the WBA/WBO/IBF Lightweight belts. Standing in his way was Fernando “The Thief” Trejo of Jarrell, TX. Trejo recently took a hard loss at the hands of Anthony Peterson, and relinquished the NABF Lightweight Title. Their paths crossed at the Hard Rock Casino on this All Hallows Eve.

With the sounding of the first bell, both Diaz, 36-4-(26), and Trejo came out with something to prove. Both fighters exchanged blows with Diaz coming out on top. Trejo,30-15-4-(18), pressed the action early, landing a few clean knocks. Diaz countered a lot of punches that Trejo threw at him. An early turning point in the fight came when Diaz landed a massive left hook to the body of Trejo. The shot seemed to weaken Trejo a bit as he lowered his guard. A right hook to the body not long after, added to the Trejo’s pain.

The fourth round saw Trejo pressing the action early. Diaz countered with punches from all angles. Although he took damage, he launched a series of brutal body shots. The work put in by Diaz seemed to slow Trejo down a lot. Diaz capitalized on it by waging a bit of a hit and run tactic. Diaz fired shots to the body and head of Trejo, pulling away from any attempted return volley. This continued through to the next few rounds, compounding the slowing footsteps of Trejo.

As the seventh, eighth and ninth rounds appeared to mimic the previous six, hopes for a Trejo victory began to all but fade. Diaz’s constant work to the head and body made retaliation a painful proposition for Trejo. The final round saw much of the same as once again Diaz danced and launched punch after punch. A brutal exchange at the end of the tenth round capped off an exceptional boxing clinic put on by Diaz. When the smoke cleared, the judges had awarded Diaz with a unanimous 10 round decision with the scores of 99-91 / 99-91 / 100-90.

This fight was a boxing lesson on speed and body work and had the desired results. Diaz didn’t just win this fight, he made a statement. With this win,

After the fight Trejo commented that he thought the fight was scored wrong, and it should have been closer. He said he would like a rematch, but thinks that is very unlikely after tonight. Diaz commented that he didn’t have a particular style with his attacks. He tended to fight where he was more comfortable. Diaz said he would like a shot at Anthony Peterson, the current NABF Lightweight Title Holder.

Flyweight
Walter Estrada (34-6-0 4 KO’s) vs. Miguel Angel Garcia (13-0-0 0 KO’s)

The second bout of the evening pitted Walter Estrada of Oxnard, CA against Miguel Angel Garcia of Barranquilla, Columbia. Estrada was looking to get back on track after a 5th round TKO loss to Kevin “Mighty” Mitchell. The loss stripped him of the WBO / Inter-Continental Super Featherweight Title.

The early rounds of this fight were slow paced, and very calculated. Each fighter seemed to paw and slip in a shot here and there, but not much else. The dense calm that had floated into the arena was broken with a rocketing haymaker in the fourth. Estrada pulled out a cruise missile of a left hook, and plastered it on the face of Garcia. The punch dropped him to the canvas, and awoke the until then, quiet crowed. Garcia survived the round, but barely.

The fifth round saw the return of the early tentativeness, followed by a sense of urgency from the sixth round out. Garcia pressed the action, and Estrada happily obliged, exchanging shot after shot, to include more haymakers that almost found their mark. After a late fight head butt that opened a cut over Estrada’s eye, things got ever more violent. Garcia seemed to smell blood in the water and jumped on Estrada with a barrage of punches.

The fight ended with the bloodied and battered pair, swinging to near exhaustion in the middle of the ring. The hard work paid off for Garcia as he was awarded a unanimous decision of 77-74 / 76-75 / 76-75. Garcia improves to a perfect 14-0-0 0 KO’s, while Estrada falls yet again and drops to 34-7-0 4 KO’s.

Lightweight
Mike Peralta (4-3-0 1 KO’s) vs Sharif Bogere (3-0-0 2 KO’s)

The first bout of the evening exhibited Sharif Bogere of Las Vegas, NV as he sported a full lion fur coat. His less flashier opponent was Mike Peralta from Carson City, NV. Early on Bogere proved himself to be a very elusive target, dispatching a lot of hit and run tactics. His unorthodox style paid dividends early in the form of a hard right hook that put Peralta down early in the second. Although Peralta made strides to figure out Bogere, nothing seemed to matter. The third round found Peralta again eating the canvas, the result of a vicious left hook Peralta’s highlight was a shot that got Bogere falling back. The late attack by Peralta wasn’t enough as Bogere won via unanimous decision with a score of 39-35. Bogere improves to 4-0-0 2 KO’s, while Peralta drops to 4-4-0 1 KO.

Featherweight
Guadalupe De Leon (7-4-0 4 KO’s) vs. Jerry “Corpus Christi Kid” Belmontes (4-0-0 1 KO’s)

The fourth bout of the evening showcased Guadalupe De Leon of Mission, TX as he took on the up and coming Jerry “Corpus Christi Kid” Belmontes from Corpus Christi, TX. This was an exhibition of speed, due in part to the hands of Belmontes. He came out quick, landed a lot of shots and received very little return fire. Outside of the fifth round which had spots of offense by De Leon, everything else went Belmontes’s way. His deafening speed continued kept him undefeated. He was awarded a unanimous decision of 59-52 / 59-52 / 60-54. The win brings Belmontes to 5-0-0 1 KO and drops De Leon to 7-5-0 4 KO’s.

Super Featherweight
Travis “The Animal” Thompson (3-3-1 0 KO’s) vs. Diego Magdeleno (6-0-0 3 KO’s)

The fifth fight on the bill showed the talents of Travis “The Animal” Thompson from Pottstown, PA as he faced off against Diego Magdeleno of Las Vegas, NV. Magdeleno, who sported a Trojan suit of armor for his entrance, came out like a beast. He unleashed handfuls of brutal punches to the body and head of Thompson. Thompson fought back valiantly but seemed to have very few answers for Magdeleno’s offense. The roman clad warrior seemed ceaseless in his attacks, and unending in the angles from which they came. For his prominent display of offensive prowess, Magdeleno was awarded a unanimous decision of 40-36 / 40-36 / 40-36. The win keeps him undefeated at 7-0-0 3 KO’s. Thompson loses the slugfest, and falls to 3-4-1 0 KO’s.

Super Lightweight
Anthony Rufino Flores (1-0-0 0 KO’s) vs. Anthony Lenk (4-0-0 3 KO’s)
The final bout of the night had Anthony Rufino Flores from Los Angeles, CA taking on Las Vegas local Anthony Lenk. Dawning a Skeletor type mask as he walked in, Lenk was all business from the start. He was calculating and quickly found holes in Flores defense. Shot after shot just seemed to fly straight down the pipe and through the guard of Flores. A sometimes jittery and fairly evasive Flores could not control the hometown Las Vegan. Lenk won in decisive fashion with a unanimous decision of 40-36 / 40-36 / 40-36. Lenk improves to 5-0-0 3 KO’s while Flores goes to an even 1-1-0 0 KO’s.
