Gomez Alfonso hand up CJones HoganPhotos
Former Contender star Alfonso Gomez says he will release his inner beast when he faces WBC junior-middleweight champion Saul Alvarez at the Staples Center in Los Angeles this September.
30-year-old Gomez, 23 – 4 – 2 (12 KOs), failed in his previous world title tilt, being blown away by then WBA welterweight king Miguel Cotto in five rounds back in 2008.
“From the very first second I was told about this fight I have been in the gym. I don’t want to have any excuses,” Gomez told today’s press conference.
“This road has been too long and too harsh for me to take anything for granted. I plan to go into September 17 with full preparation, mentally, physically and everything in between.
“Unlike his previous opponents, I intend to go in there and die in the ring to order for me to take that belt. I’m going in there to try for the knockout.
He added: “I’m hungry, I’m ready to rock ‘n’ roll. They chose me because they think I pose the least amount of threat to their champion, but my threat does not come from my hard work or my fists, it comes from within, from my white hot desire to be world champion.
“It’s burning inside of me and I plan on September 17 to unleash this beast from within me and to take this world title.”
