Rigoberto Alvarez claimed the vacant WBA junior-middleweight title via 12 round split decision against interim champ Nobuhiro Ishida in Tepic, Nayarit, Mexico on Saturday night.
Alvarez, who was fighting at 154lbs for the first time claimed the vacant title when Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto was elevated to ‘Super Champion’.
Alvarez, the brother of welterweight Saul Alvarez, improves his record to 26-2-(19), while Ishida falls to 22-6-2-(7).
