Australian National Boxing Hall of Fame Induction Dinner

By Paul Upham: The Australian National Boxing Hall of Fame will hold its inaugural induction dinner on Saturday April 12 in the Palladium ballroom at the Crown Casino in Melbourne. For two of the men who have worked so hard to bring the Hall of Fame concept to reality, the induction ceremony will be the result of much hard work and countless hours of preparation.

Gary Ellis and myself founded the organisation and brought the board together, said Hall of Fame Treasurer David Hanvey.

About two years ago we first started talking about the idea of creating the Hall of Fame, then 18 months ago we selected the Board of Directors. We selected the people who we felt could best support the cause.

The full nine-person Board of Directors for the Australian National Boxing Hall of Fame consists of;

Gus Mercurio – President
Jack Rennie - Vice President
Frank Maher – Secretary
David Hanvey – Treasurer
Mick Croucher
Gary Ellis
Greg Marcon
Bryan Membrey
Ken Watson

In what will be a momentous night in the history of Australian boxing, the first inductions into the Hall of Fame will be made in six categories from the following nominees.

Pioneers : Larry Foley, 'Young Griffo' Griffiths, Peter Jackson, Frank 'Paddy' Slavin. Two will be inducted.

Old Timers : Merv Brandon, Jack Carrol, Les Darcy, Billy Grime, Jack Haines, Ambrose Palmer. Four will be inducted.

Veterans : Tommy Burns, Jimmy Carruthers, Frankie Flannery, Vic Patrick, Ron Richards, Dave Sands. Four will be inducted.

Modern : Johnny Famechon, Jeff Fenech, Jeff Harding, Barry Michael, Tony Mundine, Lionel Rose. Four will be inducted.

Non-Participants : Snowy Baker, Ron Casey (vic), Jack Donleavy, H.D McIntosh. Two will be inducted.

Honorary Internationals : Tommy Burns, Freddy Dawson, Bob Fitzsimmons, Jack Johnson. Two will be inducted.

Hanvey says that those in attendance at the ceremony will be in for a magnificent night with some special tributes and surprises.

We’ve produced a film clip which will highlight all of the inductees, he said.

We also commissioned four painters to paint portraits of the inductees in the Pioneer, Old-Timer, Veterans and Modern categories and the originals will be auctioned off on the night.

While a very successful fundraising dinner was held last year in Melbourne to get the Hall of Fame inductions moving forward, Hanvey speaks highly of a number of organisations who are sponsoring the dinner.

Reward Insurance was our major sponsor last year and again this year. Without them, none of this would be possible, he said.

Crown have been tremendous with the venue for the dinner and making some of their other facilities available, while Sonny and Sue Berglund with The Fist Magazine and Ray Wheatley’s World of Boxing and Title Fight magazines have also been very supportive.

While Hanvey is still looking for some more sponsors for the event, nearly 300 tickets have been sold so far and he is hopeful that the final attendance will be around 400.

Tickets to the three course dinner which includes beer, wine and soft drink are available at $132.00 from the Secretary Mr Frank Maher on (03) 9478 3578 or the President Mr Gus Mercurio on (03) 9499 2292. The Australian National Boxing Hall of Fame also has its own official website //"> and Hanvey has been very happy with the support from Australian boxing fans.

The response has been very good. We have over 150 Hall of Fame members now after starting our membership drive just before Christmas, he said.

We are currently signing up members at $10 per year. All members will receive a membership card, membership pin, the ANBHOF quarterly newsletter ‘Fame News’ and will be added to the mailing list, so they can receive the latest news on Hall Of Fame events.
