Benefit Night Arranged For ‘Baby’ Jake

Hekkie Budler Headlins at Kempton Park
Hekkie Budler Headlins at Kempton Park

By Lwazi Ndzobongo: African Ring in conjunction with Golden Gloves promotions have put together an exciting card in honour of the ailing ‘Baby’ Jake Matlala.

The box and dine event will be held to help raise funds to pay of Matlala’s hospital bills after a long struggle with pneumonia. Big little men as the tournament has been named will be held at the Emperors Palace near Kempton Park on Thursday night and will be headlined by the Hekkie Budler fighting Gideon Buthelezi for Budler’s IBF junior flyweight title.

Buthelezi (11-2) will move up in weight to fight Budler and stands a chance of losing his IBO straw weight title should he lose, the unbeaten Budler (17-0) will be making the second defense of his title. Both boxers had outstanding amateur careers, Budler does boost two wins over Buthelezi from those days. Budler has had a very difficult last three fights, winning two by split decision and one by majority decision, he did fight seasoned professionals in Juanito Rubillar twice and Evaristo Primero. His progress of recent years has been quite interesting to see, abandoning his wild fighting style for a more accomplished boxing style, he will have to pressurize Buthelezi and not give him any room if he is to get past him.

Buthelezi on the other side is an smart boxer and boxes behind an educated right jab from his southpaw stance, he has promised to give Budler a boxing lesson. In his last fight he outpointed Julius Alcos over 10 one sided rounds, he will have to use his angles and box from a distance in order to beat Budler.

With Matlala rumored to be at ringside, depending on how well he is, this is sure to be a great fight and very difficult to call. This writer will go for a Buthelezi win but wouldn’t be surprised if Budler retains his title after twelve drama filled rounds.

On the undercard, Flo Simba should be too good for Sting Gonorenda Chomunorwa, in a heavyweight contest. Also at Heavyweight Stephen Castle and Elvis Moyo will battle it out over 6 rounds, both are Simba victims. At Lightweight Warren Joubert will fight Takalani Dangala over six rounds, Alexander Jonker meets Charles Sekhwibidu over four rounds. At Featherweight Prince Ndlovu and Gert Arris meet also over four rounds.

On Saturday night, Nkosinathi Joyi and Katsunari Takayama headline a five bout card at Carnival City. They will be fighting for Joyi’s IBF minimum weight title, Takayama (24-4) beat Tshepo Lefele to earn the right to fight Joyi. Unbeaten Joyi (21-0) is expected to retain his title against the tough Takayama, he was at ringside when Takayama destroyed Lefele in six rounds at the same venue in September.

On the undercard never say die Cassius Baloyi fights yet another IBF super featherweight eliminator against Argenis Mendez and should he prevail he will face Mzonke Fana for the third time. Fana beat Baloyi in September in his last bout also at the same venue, there were calls for Baloyi to quit after that fight but obviously to no avail.

Other bouts:
Chris van Heerden vs Boitshepo Mandawe; welterweight
Ruben Groenewald vs Daniel Bruwer; catchweight
Philip Ndou vs Welcome Ntshingila; welterweight
