Bredahl retains WBA crown

Johnny Bredahl produced an excellent display of boxing to clearly out-point David Guerault and retain his WBA bantamweight title at the KB Hallen in Copenhagen, Denmark Friday night (Oct 24).
The Danish champion, who was making the second defence of his title, won a unanimous decision by scores of 114-113, 117-110 and 118-111.

The 35 year-old champion came out firing from the start, attacking the body to win the round big. The French challenger settled down in the next couple of rounds and traded on equal terms but Bredahl’s class was always the dividing factor. Guerault did find success in unsettling Bredahl in the first half of the fight but faded in the latter rounds.

Bredahl floored the challenger in the ninth round with what looked like a legitimate right hand but the referee ruled against a knockdown. By the final bell, Bredahl was a worthy winner but did finish up with his right eye almost closed.

Bredahl now improves to 54-2-(26) while European champion Guerault falls to 29-2-(16). Bredahl now hopes to unify the titles.

On the undercard of the 12 fight Team Palle promoted show classy 24 year-old Mikkel Kessler retained his WBC International super-middleweight title with a ninth round stoppage win over Costa Rican challenger Henry Porras.

Following a slow start Kessler moved up the gears from round three onwards to visibly hurt Porras a number of times before referee Larry O’Connell waved the fight off in the ninth round. Kessler is now 32-0-(24). The fight also doubled up as a WBC title eliminator.
