Buthelezi Decisions Budler

By Lwazi Ndzobongo at ringside: Gideon Buthelezi counterpunched his way to the IBO Junior Flyweight Title via split decision over Hekkie Budler. Buthelezi won by scores of 118-114, 115-113 and 113-117 at Emperors Palace in Kempton Park, south Africa on Thursday.

Buthelezi landed the cleaner punches throughout the 12 rounds and deserved his win, Budler didn’t disgrace anyone, he fought hard and maintained a high work rate throughout but was caught out his lack of defense.

Round 1 started very fast, both fighters throwing and landing bombs, as if they were trying to hit the head off the shoulders of each other. The action was fast and explosive resulting in a cut under Budler’s right eye. Round two was no different pace wise but Buthelezi was landing the crispier punches and picking Budler off brilliantly as he came forward. Buthelezi remained in his counter punching mould in the third and was being very successful against the come forward champ.

Budler had a good fourth, attacking Buthelezi’s body and landing effectively. Buthelezi slowed down in the round and wasn’t landing as crisp and effective as before. Budler continued where he left off in the fourth and was the busier and more aggressive fighter in the fifth. His right hand was also landing more frequently. Round six, someone please buy Budler a defense, he was walking straight into Buthelezi’s left hand. The young man needs to tighten up his defense because against a bigger puncher he won’t be able to last too many rounds not moving his head.

The seventh was a tough round to score as both boxers took turns taking the upper hand, Buthelezi was good on the outside, while Budler was effective on the inside. Buthelezi’s crisp counter punching got the better of Budler’s work rate. Buthelezi’s superior boxing skills clearly the winner in the eighth. In the ninth Buthelezi took Budler to school, picking his punches brilliantly while the non head moving Budler continued to come straight at him.

Again in the tenth, Buthelezi was crisp and accurate, he was landing the cleaner punches throughout. Budler still came forward making a fight of it with his bigger than life heart and gusto. No one really took control of the eleventh and with the fight very close at this stage, both boxers could ill afford to relax. Both corners told their fighters they had won the fight going into the twelfth and it took more or less the same script as the previous rounds, Buthelezi good on the outside landing cleaner, crispier punches while Budler wanted to keep close and bang the body.

Buthelezi improves to 12-2(3) and becomes a two time champion, he now has to decide which belt he wants to hold onto going forward. However considering that he struggled to make the weight he is probably better of keeping this title than his IBO Straw weight title. He is a good intelligent boxer and he should be able to hold his own against the divisions other champs. Budler loses for the first time and drops to 17-1(5) and am sure he will be back to fight another day, hopefully with a tight defense.

On the undercard, Flo Simba 9-0 continued his rise with a fifth round TKO victory over a tough Sting Gonorenda 6-9. Simba looked sluggish at times but his powerful right hand came to his rescue when it landed on Gonorenda’s head for the knockdown, Gonorenda beat the count but was unable to answer the barrage of punches that followed until the referee stopped the bout at 2 minutes and 9 seconds. Simba’s next fight will be in March and he will do well to work on his defense if he is to get to the levels of stardom that the public expect of him.
