In a rematch, former WBO 108 lbs. world champion and WBA #1 rated super flyweight Hugo Cazares returned to Prefectural Gymnasium in Osaka, Japan earlier today (May 8) to outpoint hometown favorite Nobuo Nashiro, and capture the WBA 115 lbs. crown via unanimous scores of 117-111 twice and 115-113.
The 32-year-old Cazares, from Los Mochis, Mexico, was reportedly the busier boxer in a fight featuring a high level of consistent two-way action. The new champion and Nashiro previously fought on September 30, 2009; resulting in a split draw in the same venue. Cazares (31-6-2, 22 KOs) was a long-reigning WBO light flyweight titlist, having made six successful defenses before losing his belt on split scores to current champion and PFP candidate Ivan Calderon in August 2007.
Osaka resident Nashiro, 28, now 13-2-1, 8 KOs, won the then-vacant WBA title in September 2008 via split decision over Kohei Kono in Yokohama, Japan. Nashiro made two successful defenses.
