Ercument Aslan back in training

By Paul Upham: Turkish amateur star Ercument 'the Specialist' Aslan (left), 6-0 (5), is back in training after recovering from a serious neck injury sustained before Christmas which had threatened his career.

"It has taken me some time to get it right, but I am feeling good about being in the gym again," said Aslan, one of Turkey's most promising boxers who is now based in Sydney, Australia. "My neck feels good and I am ready to be 100% fit again. I am looking forward to fighting again and I want to win the Australian middleweight title as soon as I can."

Originally from the city of Ankara, Aslan has been a member of the Turkish national boxing team since 1988 with an amateur career record of 175 win and 25 defeats. He was the Junior World Amateur champion in 1994.

"The support from my major sponsor Tom Aktas (right) from ICC Home Loans allows me to train full time. I look forward to working with him as I move towards some big fights in 2004," said Aslan. "While I’m told that Sakio Bika will be fighting for the Commonwealth middleweight title in April, I don’t care who I have to fight for the Australian title. It doesn’t matter who I have to face, Bika or someone else."

One of Anthony Mundine’s sparring partners for his WBA world title winning campaign over Antwun Echols, the 27 year-old Aslan made many good judges take notice of his obvious talents. Team Mundine are looking forward to using Aslan once again as the “Man” prepares for the tough Puerto Rican Manny Siaca.

“Sparring with Anthony is great training for me,” said Aslan. “He has much talent and works hard in sparring. Some people may be very surprised how far he can go in his career.”
