Mexican puncher Jhonny Gonzalez stunned Japanese boxer Hozumi Hasagawa with a single fourth round knockout punch to claim the WBC featherweight title in Kobe, Japan on Friday night.
Hasagawa, who previously defended the WBC bantamweight crown 10 times, was making his first title defence against the mandatory No.1 contender.
The champion started the fight aggressively and quickly scored with his southpaw jab and left hands to the body. Hasagawa kept up the pressure for the three rounds but in the fourth session Gonzalez threw a well-timed right hook to the head of Hasegawa that sent him crashing to the canvas.
Hasagawa managed to get to his feet but his legs betrayed him leaving the referee no choice but to stop the fight
Hasegawa had been leading on points after the third round by scores of 30-27 and 29-28, 29-28.
