Grant Knocks Out Botha/FULL REPORT

By Lwazi ndzobongo: Michael Grant knocked out Fransie Botha with just seconds left in the 12th and final round here at Montecasino on Saturday night. He won the WBF heavyweight title in a rather poor fight, where little action happened until the last two rounds.

It was a Grant straight right that sent the tired Botha crashing to the canvas, to be counted out by the referee at 2 minutes 23 seconds into the 12th round.

Botha needed medical attention to get back on his feet. He was ahead after a big 11th round, where he had Grant in trouble but couldn’t finish him off. Much of the earlier action was around Grant looking to land the right hand whilst Botha remained busier, pocketing the rounds but with little effect.
Grant improved his record to 48-4, with 36 knockouts and Botha dropped to 48-6-3, with 28 knockouts.

Malcolm Klaasen was too fast and more skilled than Daniel Lomeli on his way to a unanimous points decision over 12 rounds. Klaasen won the vacant WBF junior lightweight title for his efforts, in his first fight since 2009.
The judges scored the fight 118-110, 117-111 and 115-113 all in favour of the South African. Lomeli of Mexico was credible in this boxing match but had too little to stop Klaasen on his way to capturing another world title.
Klaasen improved to 25-5-2, with 14 knockouts, while Lomeli dropped to 21-2, with 11 knockouts.

Ali Funeka won the vacant WBF junior welterweight title by beating Zolani Marali on a split points decision.

The two judges scored the fight 116-112 and 115-111 for Funeka, while the third judge scored it 115-112 for Marali. Funeka was lucky to get the decision as he seemed just a step behind Marali throughout the contest.
Marali was the busier fighter and seemed to have a spot on Funeka’s face for his straight left, he knocked down Funeka with the same punch in the eleventh round, Marali was deducted a point in the sixth.
Marali did seem to have done enough to get the decision and he dropped to 21-5; 13 while Funeka improved to 31-3-3; 25.

Other results:
Lubabalo Msuthu bt Daniel Tubleron SD 12; WBF Bantamweight title
Ilunga Makabu bt Pedro Ortas TKO 11; WBF cruiserweight title
Mthobisi Buthelezi bt Gerry Nekubve TKO 7; WBF International welterweight

It was a good night’s boxing from promoters Show Pony and White Buffalo, Montecasino showed it can compete boxing wise with Emperors Palace and the attendance wasn’t too bad either.
