Huck to challenge For WBO Cruiserweight Title

Fri 3-Jul-2009 17:48

Marco “Captain” Huck will challenge WBO Cruiserweight Champion Victor Emilio Ramirez at Halle´s Gerry Weber Stadium on August 29.

Exactly 20 months after falling to Steve Cunningham, the European Champion will look to erase the darkest hour of his career. “I cannot wait to fight for the world title again,” Huck (25-1, 20 KOs) said.

“I am thrilled that the fight will take place in Halle, which is just 10 miles from my hometown Bielefeld. The Gerry Weber Stadium is a fantastic venue and I will certainly please the fans on August 29.”

Huck has stopped all six of his opponents since losing to Cunningham. He knocked out Jean-Marc Monrose last September to win the European Cruiserweight Title. After three successful defences, he is now ready for a second shot at the world title. “It has always been my goal to be the best. I came close once. I will not make the same mistakes again – I have learned my lesson well,” he added.

“On August 29, I´ll be the new world champion. Ramirez better prepare himself for a tough battle!”

The Argentine champion (15-1, 12 KOs) is no stranger to the German audience after his win over former amateur cruiserweight champion Alexander Alexseev in January (TKO 9). The WBO champion last defeated Ali Ismailov in Buenos Aires in May.

Meanwhile, Ralf Weber, event director at the Gerry Weber Stadium, was thrilled to stage yet another high-profile event at his venue. “I am sure Huck and Ramirez will please the crowd with a spectacular fight,” he said. “As his KO record indicates, Huck has improved steadily over the past months. It will be a great night of boxing.”
