Two years after winning the WBA cruiserweight title Guillermo Jones finally made his first title defence at the Roberto Duran Arena in Panama City, Panama on Saturday(Oct 2) night.
Jones won the title on September 27, 2009 by defeating Firat Arslan in Hamburg, Germany, Saturday the 38 year-old improved his record to, 37-3-2-(29), via 11th round stoppage of Russian mandatory challenger Valery Brudov. Referee Luis Pabon waved off the fight due to deep cuts above Brudov’s eyes. Jones was the busier fighter throughout and looked good considering he had been out of the ring for two years.
On the undercard WBA interim flyweight champ Luis Concepcion improved his record to, 22-1-(17), by impressively taking out former champion Denkaosan Kaovichit after just 90 seconds of the opening round. Denkaosan Kaovichit falls to, 50-3-1-(20).
Also on the card WBA No.5 ranked featherweight Irving Berry, 18-1-2-(9),scored a near shutout 10 round points win over Feider Viloria, 23-7-1 in clash for the WBA International title. The scores were 100-90, 99-91, 99-91.
