Leapai Gets Knockout Revenge Over Wilson at Southport RSL

Sat 20-Jun-2009 01:29

By Paul Upham: In the their last fight almost one year to the day Colin Wilson edged a split points decision over Alex Leapai. On Friday night, Leapai was brutal in evening the score with an 8th round knockout win over former Australian heavyweight boxing champion Colin Wilson at the Southport RSL Club in Queensland, headlining an exciting card presented by Jamie Myer Productions.

“I knew Colin Wilson is an awkward fighter,” said Leapai. “My trainer Noel (Thornberry) just told me to stick with him and eventually the opening will come and that’s what I did.”

“He is very strong and put a lot of pressure on me,” admitted Wilson. “I got hit with a bloody great blow. That’s the way the cookie crumbles in the boxing game. I want to wish him all the best. He is a very strong, young fighter.”

37 year-old Wilson 34-25-1 (20) from Emerald, Queensland had his nose bloodied in round 1 by a Leapai left uppercut. Many of the rounds were split as Wilson’s ring savvy and skills kept the hard punching Leapai one step behind.

In round 8, 29 year-old Leapai 16-3-2 (12) from Logan City, Queensland, opened up and Wilson was dropped to the canvas by a right uppercut. A dazed Wilson regained his feet on unsteady legs, beating the count. But Leapai quickly rushed him and knocked him down for a second time, prompting referee Alan Moore to stop the fight at the 2:11 minute mark.

“I was just trying to pace myself,” said Leapai, “and Noel told me to pick it up and it just happened in the eighth round.”

Leapai won the interim WBO Oriental heavyweight title.

perko: I think we all know uppy who is the best heavy in aussie right now , the boxing writers should be putting big pressure on our boxing commissioners to force hoppa to fight the number one contender alex leapai instead of bob , common uppy bob should have retired by now , dont want to put down a great aussie bloke and a former great champ but his reflexes are totally shot mate - cant see or block any thing thrown at him anymore and only experience and courage getting him through the rounds now. get leapai a shot mate , you have the fans out here who rate your integrity the highest of all the boxing writers in the world.
