Malinga Proves Too Strong for Kinyogoli

Sun 5-Jul-2009 08:21

By Lwazi Ndzobongo: Patrick Malinga stopped Malik Kinyogoli in the second round with a counter left hook to win an International Lightweight bout at the Nirvana School Hall in Lenasia, South of Johannesburg on Friday night.

Malinga hurt Kinyogoli in the first round and saw the Tanzanian going back to his corner on unsteady legs. He made quick work of Kinyogoli in the second round, ducking below a southpaw straight left before unleashing the counter left hook that ended the bout after 1:11. It was Malinga’s ninth stoppage in 10 fights, having also stopped Mzolisi Yoyo in the second round in his last fight in May.

It was a fight that wasn’t too appetising. Malinga, who now is 28-2-5(25) and Kinyogoli, 12-1-5 (6). It was never going to be much of a contest and judging by some of the good action the country has had recently, this writer hopes BSA isn’t going back to its old ways of feeding the boxing public with mismatches. Kinyogoli had lost two of his last five, he had struggled to make the weight before the fight and only arrived in the country from his native Tanzania three days before the bout.

Malinga will look for better competition in the future if he is to show his real class.

Other results:
Klaas Mbonyane bt Cleutus Mbhele KO 4 Gauteng Bantamweight Title
Ilunga Makabu bt Sean Santana TKO 3 Jnr Heavyweight
Nkosinathi Ntshangase bt Ayanda Phiri KO 2 Jnr Lightweight
