Rising Filipino boxing star Donnie Nietes became a world champion in two divisions on Saturday night by dethroning Ramon Garcia of Mexico in their 12-round WBO light-flyweight title fight at the University of St. La Salle in Bacolod City south of Manila, Philippines.
The entertaining bout saw the aggressive Nietes control the early stages of the fight with straight right hands, . Garcia fought back hard in round five but Nietes stopped him in his tracks when he connected with a huge left upper cut and a left hand to the body. The sixth round also saw Nietes stagger Garcia with a big right hand then followed it up with an uppercut.
As the fight seemed to slip away from him Garcia stepped up the pace but Nietes was equal to everything
A clash of heads in the 10th round caused a small cut above Nietes’ left eye. An accidental headbutt aggravated the same cut in the 11th, forcing the ring doctor to inspect the cut.
Nietes was allowed to continue and Garcia continued to push forward but Nietes remained firm and was judged the winner on all three judges cards. The scores were 115-113,118-110 and 117-111.
One man that understandably not happy with the verdict was Garcia, who ranted after the fight. “I was robbed. I want a rematch but not here. He’s a coward because he kept on running the whole time. Next time we meet, I’m gonna knock him out.”
