Godfrey Nzimande retained his South African super featherweight title after stopping Ayanda Yaphi in the eighth round at the Orient Theatre in East London on Sunday evening.
Nzimande made an uneasy start by swinging and missing wildly but he took an early lead after decking Yaphi with a straight right hand punch to the head in the third round. Yaphi was cut above the left eye in the second round but fought his way back into the fight as the champion began to tire .The fight was messy throughout as both men wrestled with each other. In the eighth round, Nzimande landed what looked like some light punches before the referee surprisingly stepped in to stop the fight after 1.52 of the eighth. What looked like a premature ending was echoed by the protesting crowd and an angry Mzi Mnguni, the manager of Yaphi
