
Tomonobu Shimizu (19-3-1, 9 KOs), 115, claimed the WBA super-flyweight title by winning a split 12 round decision over Hugo Cazares (35-7-2, 25 KOs) in Tokyo, Japan on Wednesday.
Shimizu used his speed and good footwork to dominate early on and the championship rounds to edge out a split decision by scores of 115-113 twice and 114-116.
On the same card Japanese southpaw Koki Kameda, 26-1-(16), just about hung on to his WBA bantamweight title when he floored the previously unbeaten Mexican David De La Mora (in the third round but took his foot off the pedal in the later rounds and just about edged home via unanimous decision by scores of 114-113, 115-113 and 115-112.
