By Paul Upham in Cronulla: WBO Oriental junior middleweight champion Ryan Waters retained his title by 7th round disqualification against Pradeep Singh on Friday night at the Cronulla Sutherland Leagues Club in Sydney , NSW on a card by Left Hook Promotions.

“I can’t thank you all enough,” local favourite Waters told a passionate capacity crowd. “Pradeep gave a good fight and you helped me get the win.”

22 year-old Singh 14-1-1 (8) was penalised one point for an elbow in round 3. No prior warning had been given by referee Will Soulos. In round 6, Singh was penalised another one point. No clear signal was given by the referee for the infraction on this occasion. During the next exchange the referee warned Singh about using his elbow as a weapon on the break. Finally, in round 7, Singh was disqualified by the referee for striking Waters with his elbow. The fight was stopped at the 1:10 minute mark.

Fought at a constant pace which kept the crowd in the fight, at the end of round 1, Waters in black trunks jumped in and landed a strong right hand and Singh went down hard. Originally from India, Singh in red trunks with white trim, was up at seven and squared up with tighter defence.

30 year-old Waters 13-2-1 (8) hit the body with a right hand and landed a left hand to the head to wobble Singh early in round 2. There was then a head clash, with Singh sustaining a cut above his right eye. The round ended with a wild two-way exchange, the referee having to separate the boxers who wanted to punch on after the bell.

In round 4, Waters was forcing Singh into exchanges with constant swarming pressure. Singh replied with some crisp body punching. The challenger was wobbled with right hands and got caught standing toe to toe. Two right uppercuts from Waters titled Singh’s head towards the ceiling.

The crowd chant of “Waters, Waters” began at the beginning of round 5, which actually seemed to inspire Singh, who started with some well timed jabs and right hands. Singh was fighting well at a distance and winning his first clear round by picking off Waters as he attempted to rush forward.

Waters looked tired at the end of round 6, such was the fast pace of the fight. Ice spilled in his corner during the break, which gave Waters some extra seconds to recover, only confirmed this observation.

Then, just as the fight appeared to be getting close, the referee stopped the action upon Singh’s final break of the rules, although it appeared harsh.

Registering his first career loss, Singh and his training team were outraged by the disqualification and demanded an immediate rematch.

While former IBO world title challenger “Deadly” Robert Medley sized the winner up from the crowd, Waters had another potential opponent on his mind.

“Just a message for Junior Talipeau,” said Waters, “Here I come baby. Here I come!”
