Roy Jones Jr in action
By Paul Upham in Pyrmont: After flying into Sydney on Sunday, a relaxed and accommodating Roy Jones Jr worked out in front of lunch time fans at Star City Casino on Tuesday. The 40 year-old former pound for pound king faces Australian Danny Green on Wednesday December 2.
“It feels great, I am so glad to be able to share this opportunity with you guys here in Australia,” Jones Jr told the fans. “Everything is going beautiful.”
This fight will be Jones Jr’s first professional match outside of the USA in a career that dates back to May 1989. Time spent filming two Matrix movie sequels with actor Keanu Reeves in 2002 convinced the American that Australia would be a place he could compete on a level playing field.
“Australia is a place that really embraced me when I was here,” Jones Jr explained. “I spent two months here on two separate occasions. I was thrilled with the way people treated me with their hospitality. I fair like I can get a fair shake here in Australia. Everyone seems so nice and down to earth, which is why I am here.”
Jones will attempt to win his first belt at cruiserweight against Green, who holds the IBO world title, at the Acer Arena in Homebush, Sydney. Only one thousand tickets are left and a sell-out crowd of close to 19,000 people are expected to attend.
“Green has got the problem because he is fighting a 40 year-old killer,” said Jones Jr. “He will be respecting me in the 1st round. Trust me.”
Trainer Alton Merkerson took Jones Jr through five rounds of pad work. Asked about his plan for beating Green, the four division world champion was in a particularly playful mood.
“My tactics are to frustrate my opponent,” he smiled, “and entertain my fans while I frustrate my opponent. So, I may find myself doing it to him while talking to you all while doing it to him, but talking to you all, while also doing it to him, but doing it to him while talking to you all.”
Note: The Green-Jones fight will be televised live in Australia on Main Event Television and at participating Fox Sports Pub & Club outlets. In the USA, it will be seen on delay on VERSUS.
