August 8, 2001 - By Paul Upham: Promoter Kieran O'Connor officially announced his second star-studded promotion at a press conference in Sydney. Former WBC title challenger Shannan Taylor, 29-1-1 (19), will face Australian welterweight champion and WBA No.11 Julian Holland, 25-2-1 (15), over 12 rounds for the Commonwealth title and Australian belt at the Octagon at the Randwick Racecourse.
The winner of Taylor-Holland is expected to face WBU welterweight champion Jan Bergman later this year on one of O'Connor's monthly promotions in Sydney. The co-feature will see undefeated IBF Pan Pacific champion and IBF No.5 Nader Hamdan, 24-0 (13), defending his title against Haris Pujono from the Philippines.
Hamdan is on the verge of a world title shot with the vacant IBF title being contested by No.1 Winky Wright and No.2 Robert Frazier on September 28. The undefeated Australian is hoping to get his chance at the new champion early in 2002.
On the remainder of an eight fight card, Australian middleweight champion and knockout artist "John" Wayne Parr, 8-0 (8), faces Abdul Rasheed at junior middleweight in a non-title fight over eight rounds.
Former Australian heavyweight champion Nathan Briggs faces Abel Laulau over eight rounds, while Justin Rowsell, 30-1-2 (24), finally makes it back on the comeback trail against Sam Setu at welterweight.
Former Australian super-middleweight champion Marc Bargero faces New Zealand's Jason Rarere, Australian lightweight champion faces Gary St. Clair from Guyana over six rounds and Matt Heyes faces an opponent to be confirmed at lightweight.
After the tremendous success and support of O'Connor Sports first card in July, the second card is expected to be another sell-out with tickets available from the Spectacular Group on (612) 9212 6639. The card will be seen live around Australia on Fox Sports with the coverage commencing at 7.30pm.
