From the perspective of a boxing fan, who are Jake Paul (Jake) and AneSonGib (Gib) and why should we care about their fight on January 30 in Miami and yesterday’s press conference which preceded it? Mainly because it generated 50,000 live viewers on YouTube for the press conference alone which is significantly greater than the average audience for such an event. Massive.

Also, and most obviously, anybody who has wrapped their hands, slipped on a pair of gloves and stepped into the ring with the risk that they are going to take a good beating deserves the respect of the millions of armchair generals out there. This applies also to any combat sport – MMA, Judo, Taekwondo and others.

Both men are 23. Both men are online royalty who were at the genesis of the YouTube Fighting phenomenon. Jake is a more ‘senior royal’ than Gib, having far more followers (20m+) and a super-important older brother, Logan Paul, who recently lost to KSI in their rematch. The YouTubeFighterRank has the Miami main eventers ranked at No. 3 and No. 4 with the winner likely taking the number one spot.

Both men have worked very hard to be leaders in fields that people over 30 might consider unconventional.

Jake is a school dropout from Ohio who managed to secure the key part in US TV show Bizaardvark, was massive on popular but shortlived app Vine and was quoted in the New York Times as saying, “My personal goal is to be a billionaire.” In his chosen field of internet-based madness, he is a big kahuna. This year’s Hall of Fame inductee “Sugar” Shane Mosley is his trainer for this fight.

Gib, originally from the UAE but living in the UK, was a leading FIFA player who was associated with the very regal internet stars The Sidemen, a group that included, among others, KSI. They all seemed at one point or another to live in the same tower block in Stratford, East London, The Halo. Gib has been trained by young pro boxer Viddal Riley who also successfully trained KSI. Gib has wanted this fight for ages.

It seems that for Jake to really hit the jackpot in a potential ‘revenge’ match with KSI to settle a score for his older brother Logan, he needs to get through Gib first. KSI has said as much. Jake may be making the mistake of overlooking Gib, particularly when he described him as a “doormat”. But KSI vs Jake Paul would be a monster.

The fight itself may well be pretty decent despite the relatively low level of boxing experience of the two fighters who have just turned pro. Both are undefeated and fairly evenly matched physically, although Jake has height and reach advantages. Gib never takes a backward step and is relentless.

We know less about Jake given his main defeated opponent Deji, while spirited, was wildly overpowered. However, the left hook to the body of an in-shape Joe Weller, which earned Jake a stoppage, should give Gib cause for concern.

Shane Mosley sees Jake knocking out Gib before the third session is over and Viddal Riley sees Gib securing the KO in rounds four or five.

Whatever the outcome, based on the popularity of the live press conference on YouTube and the combined following of the two combatants, this fight is going to be massive.
