Although Amir Khan threw a bone to longtime rival Kell Brook by suggesting the pair could yet meet towards the end of the year, should the Bolton man get past Neeraj Goyat as expected, the former IBF welterweight king camnot bank on it, nor can he remain inactive in the meantime. Brook has not fought since his unanticipated struggle with Michael Zerafa (who has returned) in December, so here we suggest, in no particular order, three realistic options for big fights.

1. Terence Crawford

With PBC having locked down three of the four major belt-holders at welterweight - which Brook, under new trainer John Fewkes, insists he can still make - Top Rank’s WBO ruler Terence Crawford is in dire need of big-name challengers. Brook, who won his world title from Shawn Porter in America and has lost only to Errol Spence and Gennady Golovkin, fits the bill and while he would start a significant underdog, has the size and power at 147lbs to at least introduce some doubt into the equation.

2. Jamie Munguia

Another WBO champ, this one up at super-welter, the strong, aggressive Mexican is only 22 and improving, but looks beatable. Indeed, he appeared fortunate to retain his title against Dennis Hogan in April. His marauding style leaves gaps for Brook - long celebrated for his timing - to exploit, if he still has something left. With the Tony Harrison-Jermell Charlo WBC title rematch delayed and new unified boss Julian Williams tied into a Jarrett Hurd return, this is an available champion.

3. Liam Smith

This fight has been mooted ever since former WBO 154lb supremo Smith joined Brook’s promoter Matchroom at the beginning of this year. If both men are unable to nail down a shot at a belt in the short term, why not face each other in a highly marketable domestic clash, with world-level implications? Smith’s range and body-punching against Brook’s power and movement. Count me in.
