Daniel Dubois on… his best performance so far
I’d say my first three performances last year. Rasvan Cojanu [KO 2], Richard Lartey [KO 4] and then Nathan Gorman [KO 5] are my best as a pro. I just dedicated myself and I’m glad to have stopped all of them, cleaning up domestically and winning the British title.

Daniel Dubois on… what he does outside the ring
I splash the cash, baby! Seriously, I like to hang out at the cinema, bowling, I like suits. I’ve got to get my driving license. I’m working on it, I’ve had around six or seven lessons. I’ve been up and down the motorway so often, with my dad, that I’ve picked up a few things, so it should be no problem.

Daniel Dubois on… the secret behind his power
It’s just ground work, really, it really builds up your core. I did plenty of ground work growing up. What I did as a kid really has helped me now. My dad would say, ‘This is gonna stop you getting hurt. If you wanna come out of it without too much damage, and inflicting plenty of damage on them, you gotta do it.’

Daniel Dubois on… his amateur career across six different clubs
I wasn’t the busiest amateur but I have a lot of good memories, travelling up and down the country, getting on the planes for international tournaments. They were very exciting times for me. Changing gyms was to experience different things. Sometimes you are at a club so long you actually stop learning, coaches are so used to you they can become complacent, and you become complacent. To avoid that, sometimes we had to move.

Daniel Dubois on… whether he had an Olympic dream
Not at all. From day one in boxing I wanted to be a world heavyweight champion. I didn’t know about the Olympics or none of that. As I came up in the amateurs, you hear about the GB squad and then I wanted to get on that, but ultimately my goal was to be heavyweight champion of the world.

Daniel Dubois on… staying in Sheffield during his GB days
It depends who you’re rooming with! Sometimes you get funny loudmouths… just say you’re with someone from Newcastle, talking a different language to you and you’re like, ‘What the hell’s he on about?’ Sometimes you don’t click but it was all fun. A lot of times I was like, ‘Can I go home now?’ On the Thursdays when we would go home, I couldn’t wait to get the train back, have some food and think, ‘I feel safe now.’ It was great if my room-mate could drive coz they could drop me to the gym, catch a lift without walking.
