Reports are surfacing online that the much hyped fight between Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Terence Crawford has now been agreed.
ESPN Deportes’ Julius Julianis has reported on twitter that a deal has been reached for the two to face off in September in Las Vegas.
“Sources close to the operation tell me that an agreement has already been reached for Canelo Álvarez and Terence Crawford to face each other in September of this year in Las Vegas.”
With the bout expected to take place at 168lbs, it would require the American to jump up two weight divisions from his last outing when he defeated the then WBA super-welterweight champion Israil Madrimov on his debut at 154lbs.
One man who knows what it’s like to prepare for a Canelo fight better than most is former Gennady Golovkin trainer Abel Sanchez. ‘GGG’ and Canelo shared a famous trilogy together, with the first contest being ruled a controversial draw and the last two going the way of the Mexican.
Speaking to KO Artist Sports, Sanchez said a Crawford-Canelo match-up was ‘not a real fight’, and gives the naturally smaller man little chance in the contest, going as far to call it ‘ridiculous’.
“It’s a ridiculous fight because, I said it a while ago, Crawford is a great fighter but he’s been the same fighter from 135 to 147, he’s still the same fighter, he hasn’t changed anything to make him viable at the bigger weights, but Canelo has.
Crawford hasn’t been destroying his opponents, he destroyed one who was a shell of his former self, but Canelo is destroying everybody that he fights, destroying them, but Crawford’s not. Yes, it’s a good money fight but not a real fight.”
Fans now await official conformation that two of the biggest names in the sport will face each other this year.
