Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Terence Crawford are gearing up for their huge showdown in September.
After months of speculation, it was confirmed at beginning of the month that the pound-for-pound stars would lock horns on Saturday September 13, with Las Vegas set to play host to the monumental showdown.
Canelo will defend his undisputed super-middleweight championship against ‘Bud’ Crawford, who is bidding to make history by becoming the first fighter in male boxing history to achieve this feat in three separate divisions.
Legendary trainer Abel Sanchez, who was in the corner for Gennady Golovkin’s corner for his first and second encounters with Canelo, has weighed in on the upcoming match-up between the Mexican icon and Crawford.
Speaking to K.O. Artist Sports, Sanchez made it clear he thinks the weight difference will be too much come fight night and Canelo will be the man to get his hand raised.
“Absolutely [there are weight classes for a reason]. I think Crawford is a great fighter but Bob Foster was also, he’s moving up to a guy that’s never been hurt other than a fluke punch by [Jose] Cotto, he’s moved up and fought some of the best punchers in the bigger divisions and controlled them so it’s a tough task for Terence.”
Crawford has not fought at a weight division higher than light-middleweight, having made his debut at 154lbs against Israil Madrimov last year, becoming the WBA world champion after defeating the tough Uzbek via unanimous decision.
The 37-year-old from Omaha could write his name even deeper into boxing history when he faces Canelo in September, albeit in what is unquestionably the toughest test of his outstanding professional career.
