Gervonta Davis and Shakur Stevenson are regarded as the two best lightweights in the world.

The two men have been linked to a fight with one another for a number of years, but for one reason or another it has never been able to materialise.

‘Tank’ was last in action in March when he was held to a draw against Lamont Roach, in a controversial fight where Davis took a knee in the ninth round but a knockdown wasn’t scored.

The judges had the bout 115-113 Davis and 114-114 twice, meaning if a 10-8 round had been scored for Davis, it would have been enough to see him become the new WBA lightweight champion.

The performance of Davis has had boxing fans now reconsidering who would win in a potential bout with Stevenson, who currently holds the WBC lightweight title.

Stevenson’s last fight came in February when he stopped late replacement Josh Padley in the ninth round, after Padley had stepped in on short notice for Floyd Schofield, who was forced out of the bout on fight week through illness.

One man who has now offered his take on a potential fight between Davis and Stevenson is top trainer Abel Sanchez, who was the long-term trainer of former middleweight king Gennady Golovkin.

Speaking to Fight Hub TV, Sanchez said he would still favour Davis against Stevenson, and feels that Roach is now on the same level as Shakur.

“I still like Gervonta over both guys in the next time. I think Lamont kind of positioned himself in a tie with Shakur. Shakur has to be a little more forceful to deal with these guys. I don’t think his approach to the fight can stay the way it is now and deal with a Lamont or Gervonta.

“He doesn’t do enough to win rounds decisively and against these guys who are going to do the things necessary to win the rounds. Not that he’s not going to get knocked out but he’s just not busy enough at times and too perfect.”

A fight between Davis and Stevenson is still unlikely to take place any time soon, with ‘Tank’ instead set to rematch Roach this summer.
