America’s Heavyweight Hope With 90% KO Rate Faces Toughest Test Of His Career

A highly-rated American heavyweight is set for the biggest test of his professional career next month.

America has famously had a number of iconic heavyweights, with the likes of Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson still remaining some of the biggest names to ever lace up a pair of gloves.

In more recent times, Deontay Wilder has flown the flag for the USA, holding the WBC heavyweight title for a number of years, but now another hard-hitting star is looking to reach the top.

California’s Richard Torrez Jr has had a positive start to his journey in the paid ranks, remaining undefeated through 12 outings since he made his debut three years ago after picking up a silver medal at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

The 25-year-old has beaten all but one of his opponents by stoppage, with his contest against Joey Dawejko ending in a DQ after the 35-year-old from Philadelphia was cited by the referee for excessive holding.

With Torrez now looking to make a significant step-up in opposition, he is scheduled to face Guido Vianello on April 5 in Las Vegas in an intriguing heavyweight showdown. Vianello is coming off an impressive stoppage victory against Arslanbek Makhmudov last August.

In an interview with Dan Rafael, Torrez previewed his upcoming bout against Vianello, as he looks to prove his credentials and push towards a shot at the world heavyweight championship.

“This is something I’ve been working toward for a long time. I want to prove that I’m the best heavyweight out there and show what American heavyweights are made of. When they offered me Guido, I didn’t hesitate. I’m ready to go.”

A victory over Vianello would undoubtedly be the best of Torrez’s career, although it will not be an easy task for the 25-year-old. Torrez is currently ranked at 17th with the WBC and 14th with the IBF, with his sights firmly set on pushing even higher up the ratings if he can come through the hard-hitting Italian next month.
