An unbeaten American heavyweight is on the verge of securing himself the opportunity at moving one step closer to a world title shot.
California’s Richard Torrez Jr has had an impressive start to his professional career, remaining unbeaten in 14 bouts since making his debut back in March of 2022.
The 26-year-old produced a career-best win over Italy’s Guido Vianello last April, defeating the former Olympian via unanimous decision at the conclusion of their clash at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas.
After stopping Tomas Salek in the opening round of his most recent outing in October, Torrez now finds himself on the verge of securing a deal to fight for the opportunity to face IBF world heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk.
As reported by Boxing Scene, Torrez has been ordered to face Cuba’s Frank Sanchez in a final eliminator for the IBF heavyweight crown, with both fighters said to be edging closer to finalising a deal for what is expected to be an intriguing match-up.
IBF officials revealed that an extension had been granted to allow extra time for the teams of Torrez and Sanchez to make the fight, after purse bids were initially called last month.
Sanchez will be keen on finalising his long-awaited return to the ring after fighters such as Daniel Dubois, Efe Ajagba and Moses Itauma all pulled out of the running to face him in an eliminator for the IBF crown.
Usyk’s next move could see him defend his WBC, WBA and IBF belts against Deontay Wilder, with a bout against the Torrez vs. Sanchez winner then potentially happening later in the year – though the Ukrainian vacating the belt seems a more likely option.
