Some in the sport have taken issue with three 116-112 scorecards in favour of unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk in his rematch with Tyson Fury.
The two elite heavyweights met for the second time this year in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia after Usyk won a split decision back in May. This time around the judges were much more convinced of the Ukrainian’s work, leading to a clear unanimous decision after 12 hard-fought rounds in which both men had success.
Speaking to Box Nation, former world champion Amir Khan, who had predicted a Fury win pre-fight, revealed that he thought the Brit ‘could have nicked it’ after scoring it five-five through ten from ringside.
“Look, it was a close fight. It could’ve gone either way in my opinion. What did [the judges] give Tyson, four rounds? Yeah, 8-4. I don’t think it was that honestly. I had it even in round ten going into the final two rounds. I thought Tyson might’ve nicked it. It could’ve gone either way, but with them both the very best.
Tyson thought he won the fight by looking at him, a lot of people thought he won the fight. It’s boxing, it’s what the judges saw. I think Tyson was getting big shots in, catching Usyk with some big shots … Tough day for the Brits. We wanted those titles home.”
Fury himself is convinced he won by at least three rounds, as his promoter Frank Warren. At the post-fight press conference, Usyk said Warren must be ‘blind.’
