Joe Calzaghe against Carl Froch is one of the most talked-about fantasy fights in Britain.
Calzaghe is often regarded as one of the best fighters of his generation. He held the super-middleweight title for over a decade and retired unbeaten after winning all 46 of his fights, including a final two up at light heavyweight against Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr, who are both legends in their own right.
Froch was also a long time super-middleweight champion with a granite chin and an iron will, which saw him inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2023.
Speaking to TNT Sports Boxing, Khan gave a rather controversial view that Froch was a success due to cherry picking opponents.
“Joe Calzaghe would destroy Carl Froch, I think a lot of fighters would destroy Carl Froch, you know. I think Carl Froch was managed well. He was picked for the right fights at the right time.”
‘The Cobra’ shied away from very few, if any, fights in his career. He went Stateside to fight the likes of Jermain Taylor and pulled off a dramatic knockout win in the dying seconds despite being down on all the cards.
After retaining his WBC super-middleweight title in that fight, he had a home defence against the well-rated Andre Dirrell, and travelled away to fight Mikkel Kessler, Arthur Abraham, Glen Johnson and Andre Ward, whilst also famously taking on young challenger George Groves.
Although the first win was a controversial one after an early stoppage, Froch made sure of a much more conclusive victory in the legendary rematch in May 2014 when he knocked Groves out cold before retiring with a record of 35 fights and 33 wins.
