After months of speculation, Saul ‘Canelo‘ Alvarez vs Terence Crawford has been officially announced.
The modern pound-for-pound greats will do battle on Saturday September 13 in Las Vegas, although the actual venue is yet to be revealed.
Canelo will make the first defence of his undisputed super-middleweight titles in what is his second reign as champion. The 34-year-old from Mexico defeated former IBF champion William Scull on May 2 to become the first fighter in boxing history to achieve undisputed at 168lbs on two separate occasions.
Another legendary fighter who has shown an interest in the upcoming showdown between Canelo and ‘Bud’ is two-weight world champion Andre Ward, who has predicted what he believes the outcome will be in September.
In an interview with Boxing News, Ward admitted that whilst the significant jump in weight could be a step too far for Crawford, he believes that the 37-year-old will be successful on the night and will defy the odds once again.
“I’m going with Terence Crawford, you know, big weight jump, dangerous fight, but somebody has got to prove to me that they can break Terence Crawford’s will and that he can’t figure it out against you. It ain’t no disrespect to Canelo but I’ve said this the last couple, I am not betting against Terence Crawford against anybody right now, you’ve got to show me that you can beat him.”
Should Crawford be victorious over the Mexican star, the unbeaten 37-year-old from Omaha will become the first fighter in male boxing history to win the undisputed championship in three weight divisions, having already achieved this feat at super-lightweight and welterweight.
