Tyson Fury Coach Andy Lee Reveals How Fury Is Really Handling Retirement: “That’s What He Told Me”

Andy Lee has long been close with former world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury.

Lee himself previously held world honours who became a trainer after hanging up his professional gloves. The former middleweight world champion worked alongside ‘The Gypsy King’ for a number of fights including a couple against Deontay Wilder in his epic trilogy.

More recently, Lee has focused on working with New Zealand heavyweight and former WBO ruler Joseph Parker. Together they have put together a superb run that has seen Parker beat Zhilei Zhang, Wilder and most recently Martin Bakole.

Meanwhile, Fury has taken back-to-back fights with Oleksandr Usyk in his bid to become an undisputed champion. He lost the first fight by split decision in May 2024, then in December in the rematch lost on all three judges’ scorecards.

That result led him to announce his retirement in a short video at the start of January.

Speaking to iFL TV, Lee was asked if he wanted to see Fury come out of retirement.

“As bad as it sounds, it depends what the figure is for Tyson. It has to motivate him to come out of retirement. He seems very happy.”

Lee then discussed the prospect of Fury facing Anthony Joshua.

“I don’t really care if they fight each other. I’d be happy to see them retire or go about their careers separately. If they do fight, I’d be backing Tyson, I think he’d win.”

He then revealed how Fury is currently dealing with his decision to walk away.

“Just the odd message here and there and he seems vey happy, ‘Andy I’m not f**ked’ that’s what he said, ‘I couldn’t be f**ked with it’, he’s very happy.”

The world had hoped that long-time rivals Fury and Joshua would finally get together for an epic and legacy-defining fight in front of a huge crowd this year. But for now, that one remains off the table as Fury remains retired.
