At various stages in his career, Anthony Joshua was considered to be the best boxer in Britain, but he has now named who he deems to be the current number one.
Particularly in the early part of his career, ‘AJ’ was a wrecking ball who stopped all of his opponents inside the distance, including Charles Martin to lift his first world title. It wasn’t until 2019 when he was a unified champion that he first came unstuck with an upset loss to Andy Ruiz Jr.
Joshua avenged that before the year was out, then lost back-to-back fights with Oleksandr Usyk in 2021 and 2022. He had once again worked his way back to the top but suffered a devastating stoppage defeat to IBF ruler Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium in September.
Speaking prior to that epic all-British heavyweight clash, he was asked by TNT Sports to name the best currently active fighter from this country and he went with the current WBA featherweight world champion.
“The best boxer from the UK right now is Nick Ball.”
Ball hails from Merseyside and has won 20 of his 21 fights with just one draw against Rey Vargas. He has previously beaten the likes of Isaac Dogboe and Isaac Lowe and lifted his first world title after beating US talent Raymond Ford in a close, high-quality battle on June 1 of this year in Saudi Arabia. The hard-fought victory came via split decision as part of the Queensberry team’s win over Matchroom in the 5 v 5 event.
