Antonio Margarito has summed up Canelo Alvarez’s chances of securing a future victory over Terence Crawford.
It has been suggested in the last few weeks that Canelo could now be set to pursue a rematch with his American rival at some stage in 2026, after it was initially expected that a second encounter between the pound-for-pound greats would not take place.
In an interview with Fight Hub, retired former world welterweight champion Margarito admitted that he believes Crawford would beat Canelo ‘easier’ than he did in their first meeting, should a rematch take place next year.
“They’re talking about a rematch. I think he [Crawford] beats Canelo easier, I believe so. Well it’s Crawford’s style right? I think Canelo can’t beat Crawford now.”
Margarito was then asked what he believes Canelo could do differently to make a potential rematch with ‘Bud’ closer.
“Well, what we all know, I think he needs to exchange punches, throw more shots, you know? But it’s boxing, and they’re both well-prepared now. If Crawford beat him once and knew how, I think he can win again.”
Should Crawford not meet Alvarez for a second time, he may consider a move down to middleweight to pursue world titles in a fifth division. He has publicly stated that he ‘has his eyes’ on unified champion Janibek Alimkhanuly.
