Artur Beterbiev is looking to maintain his 100% knockout ratio in his next fight at light-heavyweight, and he has shared his thoughts on Canelo Alvarez announcing his desire to return to the division in the future.
The Russian has so far comprehensively beaten everyone he has faced including Brits Anthony Yarde, Callum Johnson and Callum Smith, along with many others.
He currently holds three of the four major world titles and on October 12 goes into a mouthwatering undisputed light heavyweight showdown with the equally talented Dimitry Bivol out in Saudi Arabia.
The fight has been a long time coming but now, after a delay due to an injury for Beterbiev, will see his raw power come up against the slick skills, footwork and defence of Bivol in one of the best match-ups that can be made in world boxing.
Whoever wins will have many options, one of them being a fight with Canelo who has stated his desire to return to the light heavyweight division having previously been a world champion at 175 after knocking out Sergey Kovalev in 2019. He would move up again in 2022 but fall short against Bivol and has been keen on a rematch ever since.
Speaking to The Stomping Ground, Beterbiev was asked how he felt about a fight with the Mexican and was nonplussed.
“I don’t know. Canelo Alvarez has one belt from my division, that time I want to fight with him but now I don’t think so. I’m really not interested in that fight.”
He was asked then if the belts were most important to him.
“Of course.”
Both Bivol and Beterbiev have been impressively laser-focused on this fight and not keen on entertaining what might come next, however Beterbiev has said he may move up to cruiserweight if he wins.
