Bob Arum has had his say on the retirement of Tyson Fury.
Arum and Top Rank have worked with Fury for the past number of years, helping guide the ‘Gypsy King’ to the WBC heavyweight title when he stopped Deontay Wilder back in February 2020.
Most recently Fury was involved in two fights with Oleksandr Usyk, but the Brit came out on the wrong side of both of them, losing by split decision last May to miss out on the chance to become undisputed, before then suffering a points defeat in their rematch in December.
It was expected that ‘The Gypsy King’ would then head into a showdown with domestic rival Anthony Joshua, but those plans were scuppered in January when Fury abruptly announced his retirement.
It isn’t the first time that Fury has claimed he was hanging up his gloves only to return, so some fans still believe a Joshua fight could take place, but legendary promoter Arum has told Sky Sports that he wants his fighter to stay retired.
“I think Tyson Fury owes it to himself and his family to remain happily retired. Not from life, because I believe he has a lot in front of him, because he is a good communicator and he is an entertainer, but I don’t think he should step in the ring again because I think he’s had enough.
“Fortunately in the last two years of his career he earned so much money that his family and himself are never going to want for money. I would advise him not to ever go back in the ring, but to make himself useful as a spokesperson because he can communicate extraordinary well. People are intrigued by him and I think he can do a lot of good.”
Fury’s decision to retire has seemingly left Joshua in limbo when it comes to finding his next opponent, but over the past week ‘AJ’ has now been linked to a shock fight against Youtuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul.
