Bob Arum spent time in the sport of boxing promoting both Floyd Mayweather and Terence Crawford, and has now weighed in on how a fantasy match-up might go.
Mayweather famously retired with a perfect 50-0 record, picking up titles in five divisions and becoming the biggest pay-per-view star in the sport whilst doing so. He has been retired since 2017.
Crawford is coming towards the end of his own campaign, but is looking to go out with a bang after becoming a four-weight champion and two-time undisputed champion when he faces former Floyd rival Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez later this year.
Had Mayweather been competing today alongside Crawford, a fantasy fight would have most likely taken place at welterweight or as high as super-welterweight, with fans intrigued to see how Crawford’s power and accuracy stacked up against Mayweather’s elite defence.
Asked by Sean Zittel who wins a prime vs prime battle between the two Americans, Arum picked Crawford straightaway.
“Crawford. Because Crawford is a unique kind of fighter that other fights haven’t seen. The ability he has to switch, fighters aren’t used to that. They don’t train for that. I just think he is a very, very unique talent.
“[Our relationship] has nothing to do with his ability as a fighter … As a fighter, he’s a unique, superior guy.”
Mayweather has recently said he recognises ‘Bud’ as the current pound-for-pound fighter on the planet, though he is unlikely to go as far as to say that his countryman could beat him in the ring.
