Terence Crawford is relentlessly trekking a path to cement himself as the best fighter of his era.
World champion in three divisions and undisputed in two, he is soon to make the move up to super-welterweight in an attempt to add a fourth to the mix.
When Americans accomplish so much in the sport, particularly doing so undefeated, the comparisons to one Floyd Mayweather are almost inevitable. Given they competed in the same weight classes, talk of a fantasy fight is also common.
Perhaps the most effective switch-hitter in boxing, it’s that unique skill ‘Bud’ possesses that veteran promoter Bob Arum told ES News would give him the edge over Mayweather.
“Crawford [would beat Mayweather]. Crawford fighting, a guy his size, is unique [because] one thing that he has that other fighters don’t have is that he’s totally ambidextrous. So when he shifts from orthodox to southpaw he’s equally effective either way.
Arum – who worked with both Mayweather and Crawford before they choose free agency – went on to use the example of the statement Errol Spence Jr victory to become undisputed at welterweight, a fight he says he knew Crawford would breeze.
“That’s why I knew why there was no contest fighting Spence. When you looked at Spence’s resume there were two busboys that were left handed that he fought. What did that tell you? That he kept him away from southpaws. BoMac and Crawford knew don’t start fighting orthodox, just go in and fight southpaw because Spence can’t fight a southpaw.”
